Cuba's state enterprise GeoMinera S.A. and the Canadian company Millbrook Minerals Inc. have signed a contract of international economic association to undertake a new mineral prospecting project.
The two companies will work together doing geological reconnaissance and investigation over a 318 square kilometer area in the provinces of Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, and Ciego de Ávila, with the goal of locating mineral deposits and forming joint enterprises for their exploitation and commercialization.
Gustavo Puentes Pereda, GeoMinera general director, told Granma that the intention is to find new deposits of copper, zinc, and other precious minerals, and begin mining operations over the next five years.
The agreement, he said, is a landmark for relations between the two companies, which have been working together for 20 years.
"It also represents a commitment to advance jointly in the development of the country's mining, in accordance with current legislation," he stated.
