Recognition abounds, above all, of the human being, the doctor, the man who has defined himself as a revolutionary, always true to Martí and Fidel; the man who for 25 years has combined his vocation to save lives in an operating room with protecting a greater good in anonymity and safeguarding the homeland.
Carlos Leonardo Vázquez González is not only Fernando, the State Security agent, as we learned just a few hours ago, who for more than two decades, maintained contact with counterrevolutionary elements, in order to prevent the destabilization and political subversion in the country they plan. He is also a MSc specialist in General Medicine and Oncology, who is known as an admirable professional at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology where he works.
Thus, it is no surprise that his colleagues in the surgical theater, those with whom he has shared long nights on duty, and his students were present at the tribute he received, on behalf of the Cuban people. Nor is it surprising that he received this recognition with Minister of Public Health Dr. José Angel Portal Miranda on hand.
Pride and admiration are two words that were repeated more than once by those who know him and, now that they know about his undercover work, they feel even more respect. Carlos surprises, again, when you hear him say that he still owes a debt to the homeland, that his only desire is to honor his people, the Revolution, and our Comandante en jefe Fidel Castro. His modesty, the human stature of this Cuban, is more than evident.
If anyone doubts it, remember the revelations made by Dr. Vazquez on the Cuban television program Razones de Cuba, which exposed the real intentions of of one of the main promoters of the purported illegal marches called for November 15 across the island - not as transparent, isolated or spontaneous as he would like the world to believe.
Referring to Yunior García Aguilera - the new face of the counterrevolution - Dr. Vazquez insisted that he is seeking to provoke a confrontation between the Cuban Armed Forces and the people, adding, "We can see in him the creation and performance of a counterrevolutionary," the product of international programs training leaders to promote regime change in Cuba.
The courageous statement made by the doctor, a true patriot, provided names and dates, and the latest efforts in an old pretension of the U.S. government: to overthrow the Revolution, a goal that will be pursued as long as Cuba resists, never surrendering.
