CARACAS.— The governmental strategy to combat the use of arms in Venezuela has achieved favorable results since its initiation on September 21, 2014.
The Venezuelan Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Carmen Meléndez, stated that citizens have voluntarily handed over 1,038 weapons, as part of the National Disarmament Plan.
She reiterated the call to Venezuelan authorities to support the project, and stated that a percentage of the weapons will be used to make screws for Venezuela’s Great Housing Mission.
The National Voluntary Disarmament Plan was approved by President Nicolás Maduro, on September 21, during International Pace Day celebrations.
There are currently dozens of disarmament centers in operation across the country, where people can voluntarily hand over their weapons.
For the Bolivarian government every dangerous weapon taken out of circulation is one less chance for violence, death and crime.
The objective of the Plan is to disarm people in order to build a peaceful country. The project forms part of Venezuela’s "Gran Misión A Toda Vida" created in 2012 in response to the country security problems.
