Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Vice President of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers, addressed the opening session of the IV CELAC Summit, this afternoon, January 27, in Quito, noting the importance of defending integration, and emphasizing that Cuba believes in solidarity and cooperation, which CELAC can facilitate.
He continued, “We thank our brothers and sisters of Latin America and the Caribbean for their support of the elimination of the economic blockade imposed on our country by the United States, for the return of territory occupied by the Guantánamo Naval Base, and that migration from our country be legal and more secure.”
Díaz-Canel added that Cuba, as a guarantor and the site of peace talks to end the conflict in Colombia, remains firmly committed to this process.
He noted that tomorrow, January 28, the 163rd anniversary of the birth of Cuba’s national hero José Martí will be commemorated, and that tonight youth will march bearing lit torches from the University of Havana to celebrate the date.
