The US elections are five months away.
Of the two candidates, Republican Donald Trump is on trial and awaits sentencing on July 11. Meanwhile, Democrat Joe Biden is cornered by his inconsistencies regarding his support for the war in Ukraine, and inaction to seek peace in Palestine.
Regarding the last of the electoral levers, in recent days the occupant of the White House has moved pieces in his political chess, and has presented a so-called Roadmap for a cessation of hostilities in Gaza, with three phases, published The New York Times.
The first establishes that both sides - Israelis and Palestinians - will respect a six-week cease-fire, in which Israel will withdraw from the main sites in Gaza, and a number of hostages held by the Palestinians would be released.
Up to 600 trucks carrying humanitarian aid would also be allowed into the Strip, and thousands of displaced persons would be allowed to return.
In addition, Israel and Hamas would negotiate to reach a permanent cease-fire and, should the talks drag on, the first phase would continue until they reach an agreement.
With such a ceasefire in place, the second part of Biden's plan calls for a full Israeli withdrawal from the area, the release of all Israeli hostages, including male soldiers, and, in return, the release of more Palestinian prisoners.
In a third part of the Roadmap, Hamas would return the remains of the dead hostages, the rubble would be removed and a three to five years reconstruction period would begin, supported by the U.S., Europe and international institutions.
Regardless of whether or not this plan to find peace in Palestine materialized, the Zionist army continued the massacre, to such an extent that even Biden himself acknowledged, in an interview published in Time magazine, that “Netanyahu is prolonging the war in Gaza to stay in power”.
Whatever its origin and whoever its proponents may be, the situation there is so desperate that one question is imposed: will this Roadmap work, so that so many people stop dying?
