This was a day of celebration at the White House for the presidents of the United States.
Joe Biden, who has one month and 26 days left as president, summoned some 2,500 of his closest collaborators -many of whom are already looking for a place to work after January 20, when Donald Trump enters the White House-, at the beginning of a long day of activities to pay tribute to his administration in the last four years.
The invitation, as is traditional, is the stage for the President to pardon two turkeys, so that they will be "saved" from the sure Christmas execution.
Jolly at last, everything is talked about and even the biggest lies go unnoticed, or the fantasy of the host when he declared: "It has been the honor of my life. I am eternally grateful."
Of course, no one would think that Joe Biden, at that moment, would remember that while they were celebrating and "pardoning" two turkeys, Palestinian children could be dying, massacred by Israel, whose lives are ending because of a genocide in which Washington -and Biden himself-, with its weapons, its money and its diplomacy, are totally involved.
In this environment, the President also does not "consult" with some "high level" guests on whether or not he should pay attention to a large part of the American people or to the hundreds of congressional and other officials who are demanding an end to the blockade of Cuba or, at least, to remove it from the infamous list that links it to terrorism.
Just as he did with the "Peach" and "Blossom" turkeys, when he signed his "pardon" to -at least for that night- "save" them from certain death, perhaps one of his guests could have warned him that it would be much more useful for him to affix his signature -as requested by millions of Americans, among them congressmen and other high officials- on a simple resolution to erase this criminal injustice against the Cuban people.
But he preferred to watch the "Peach" turkey, who looked uneasy, next to the president. Then Biden said, "Peach is making a last-minute plea." He changed the conversation, and referred to "peach pie being her favorite."
On Thanksgiving Day in the United States, since the time of President Harry Truman, this holiday has been celebrated, with the President "pardoning" two turkeys. In 1989, with George W. Bush in power, the tradition was interrupted, which has since been revived by governors such as Joe Biden.
