Vatican’s spokesman Federico Lombardi announced April 22 that Pope Francis will visit Cuba, prior to his tour of the United States which will include the cities of Washington, New York and Philadelphia.

"I can confirm that Holy Father Francis, having received and accepted the invitation by civil authorities and bishops of Cuba, has decided to visit that island before arriving in the United States for a trip announced some time ago,” reads the communiqué issued by Lombardi.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, completing a European tour in Brussels also confirmed the Pope's visit to Cuba in September. Rodriguez said that the Pope "will receive Cuba’s warmest hospitality."

"His commitment to eradicating poverty in the world arouses the admiration of all," the diplomat commented. Pope Francis will become the third Pope to visit Cuba, following the historic visits of John Paul II in 1998, and Benedict XVI in 2012.
