The official re-opening of the U.S. embassy in Cuba will take place today, August 14, with the attendance of Secretary of State John Kerry who is making a historic visit, the first by a U.S. official of his stature in 70 years.
The official raising of the flag at the embassy located on Havana’s emblematic waterfront taking place today is the counterpart of the ceremony which took place in Washington, July 20, with the reopening of Cuba’s mission there.
The event culminates a process which began last December 17, with the announcements by Presidents Barack Obama and Raúl Castro announced their intention to re-establish diplomatic relations, severed by the U.S. January 3, 1961.
Some 500 journalists are on hand to cover the event, and a joint press conference with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez and Kerry is scheduled for later this afternoon
