OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF CUBA CENTRAL COMMITTEE

U.S. officials confirmed in Havana this Monday that diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba had been reestablished, and the country’s Interests Section in the Cuban capital was now officially an embassy.

A press release noted that the re-opening of the embassy is in line with the announcement made on July 1 by President Barack Obama.

“The United States Interests Section has officially become the U.S. Embassy in Havana, and will continue its diplomatic functions from its headquarters on the Malecón, under the leadership of Chargé d'Affaires ad interim Jeffrey DeLaurentis,” the press release reads.

It also adds that Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Cuba this summer to celebrate the re-opening of the U.S. Embassy in Havana and raise the American flag. In the coming weeks more details about the re-opening ceremony will be provided.

U.S. network CNN confirmed on its Twitter account that Kerry will make a “historic visit” to Cuba on August 14.

According to CNN, the information was provided by senior government officials and diplomatic sources.
